“SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — Microsoft Corp. and Novell Inc. are entering into a partnership that could help Novell’s Linux operating system, according to a media report Thursday. Under the agreement, which isn’t final, Microsoft will offer sales support to Novell’s Suse Linux, the Wall Street Journal reported on its Web site…”
After reading this, I figured I must be having some kind of weird dream so I went to take a cold shower and wake up… blood came out of the shower head! Just then I heard screams from outside and brimstone was raining down from the heavens. I’m going back to bed and hide under the covers.
Seriously, I had been holding out hope that Novell would take on Microsoft head to head like in the good old days when Netware was a dominant force. With their previous technologies all ported over to Linux (Netware has gone too far down the wrong path to come back) and their very strategic acquisitions in the past several years, I thought they finally had all the tools they need to compete. I even bought stock in them. My stock may go up, but not for the reasons I was hoping for. I don’t know what MS was holding over their heads; I thought the SCO vs. Linux thing was practically dead. I assume the volume of analysis of this partnership will eclipse even the release of Vista and Office 2007.
